In partnership with SkillsUSA, Fine Homebuilding has raised $70,000 to fund scholarships for students in construction-related fields. Here are the recipients of the 2018-2019 Woodworking and Wood Manufacturing scholarships:
Alexis Hribar
High school senior Alexis Hribar is a Keep Craft Alive and SkillsUSA scholarship recipient hoping to pursue a career in wood manufacturing. Alexis is highly motivated, hard-working, eager, and bold and demonstrates these skills on a day to day basis in the shop. Her passion and skills are shown in her advanced projects and determined desire to learn how to use complex tools in order to further her education, qualification, and talents. Although Alexis is creating extraordinary projects and is able to use advanced technology, her favorite things are the sounds, smells, and environment that wood manufacturing creates. Alexis states: “The masterful way people learn to manipulate their craft intrigues me I wish to learn as well.” Her desire to further her learning and her impressive abilities prove she has high potential to succeed exceedingly.
Shawn Evelyn
Shawn Evelyn is a high school student and a recipient of the Keep Craft Alive and SkillsUSA scholarship. To Shawn, woodworking is not just a trade, but a passion and meaningful part of his past, present, and future. Shawn’s involvement in SkillsUSA originated from his attentiveness to the skills gap and knowledge of how important the trades are to every aspect of living. He wants to make a difference in the world and positively contribute to keep the trades alive. He has worked hard for the past four years and continues to learn as much as he can from the generation above him. Shawn has participated as lead project manager for the Teamworks competition for SkillsUSA where his high school finished 3rd overall for the Region 6 competition for California, and according to a former teacher was “poised to receive the Sultana Honors Award for vocational education.” In the future, Shawn wants to become a licensed contractor and run his own construction company.
Winners will be acknowledged at a special reception on Thursday, June 28, 2018, during the 54th Annual National Leadership and Skills Conference, at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, KY.
